Dunwoody Real Estate Market no longer held hostage to School Redistricting…

The decision has been made! All current elementary school attendance lines will remain the same as they are today. There will be no redistricting. The Board has another solution for the overcrowded Dunwoody elementaries.

Writing from the perspective of both a Dunwoody parent and a Dunwoody Real Estate Agent, I think this is great news. As a realtor, over the last year here in Dunwoody, if it wasn’t the first question that buyers would ask, it was the second question - “What elementary school does this house feed to? ” As soon as I would answer this question, the buyers would then immediately follow up with this question “Are these the old lines or the new redistricting lines?”.

Buying a home is a big purchase. It’s not like going out to the mall and buying a pair of shoes. Don’t get me wrong, I like to buy shoes, what woman doesn’t? But a little more thought and consideration goes into buying such a huge investment. Finding the right home is tough enough based upon each individual’s requirements, such as type of home, number of bedrooms and baths, kitchen, family room, and the list goes on…however, the above mentioned items are tangible and fixed items. They are as they appear. It is what it is. When an individual is faced with a variable, or uncertainty, such as the school lines being redistricting, it is tough to process. So many times over the last year, I have heard buyers say “We are going to wait and see what the Dekalb County School Board announces in regard to the redistricting before we decide where we are going to buy”.

Facing Change - Dunwoody Schools Redistricting

We just had a parent conference with one of our son’s teachers yesterday. I am happy, and very proud, to say that he is doing very well…now, that is.  Because at the beginning of the year, things weren’t really clicking for him. However, that’s not why I am writing this. Instead, I am sharing this with you because there is much talk about the redistricting of the elementary schools in Dunwoody.

Parents, students, and teachers alike are wondering how this change will affect them. I am wondering that same thing. Let me explain…I am so grateful to the team of teachers that our son has. They have made such a positive impact on his development.  By giving him the tools to succeed, they have given him the desire to learn.  I really feel like he is on the right path and I wonder how going to a new school in September of 2009 will affect my child’s education.

I always try to look at the positive side of things. I have started to reconcile all of this. Really, what it comes down to and what is at the heart of this matter, is that no one likes change.  People have a real fear of change. It is the fear of the unknown.  Whatever their current situation is, it may be good or bad, they know what they have and what to expect.

When presented with change, you don’t know exactly what to expect. It could put you in a much better situation, 100 times better than what you have, but because it is new, or unknown, you fear it.

To help everyone, myself included, with this impending change of the schools being redistricted, I will point out a few positives to focus your mind set:

  • Brand new facility
  • The latest technology
  • Classrooms, not trailers

And by the way, have seen the new Peachtree Charter Middle School? That new school is fabulous!
